About the Inner Experience Scale

The Inner Experience Scale is based on the original Online Alexithymia Questionnaire. This version keeps the same overall structure and purpose, while updating the dimension names and descriptions to use clearer, more neutral language.

About the Structure of the Questionnaire

The questionnaire looks at seven dimensions of inner experience. These describe patterns in how you notice, understand, and relate to feelings, relationships, and imagination. None of these dimensions are good or bad. They reflect different ways people experience and make sense of their inner world.

  • Noticing Feelings: How easily you notice what’s going on inside you, even when feelings are unclear, mixed, or hard to put into words.
  • Expressing Feelings: How comfortable you are putting your feelings into words or showing them in ways that feel natural to you.
  • Understanding Feelings Through Others: How much you rely on other people’s reactions or descriptions to help make sense of what you might be feeling.
  • Emotional Avoidance: A preference to focus on facts, logic, or external details rather than reflecting on feelings or emotional meaning.
  • Imagination and Inner World: How much imagination, daydreaming, or inner imagery shapes how you experience and understand your feelings.
  • Relational Misattunement: How awareness of feelings influences closeness, understanding, and connection with other people.
  • Comfort with Intimacy: How emotional awareness affects comfort, desire, and ease in physical or sexual closeness.

How it works

The scale includes 37 statements. Each statement is answered on a five-point scale, from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree.”
